What this Safari is About
This 2 day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari from Arusha is designed around two parks that have almost nothing in common. That is exactly what makes it work.
Tarangire is open savannah with a permanent river running through it. During the dry season the river becomes the only water source for miles, which means the wildlife concentrates around it in numbers that are hard to believe. The elephant herds here are the largest in Tanzania. You will see them in family groups, in bachelor herds, at the water, in the dust. Your guide will explain what each group is doing and why.
Ngorongoro is completely different. It is a volcanic crater that collapsed on itself three million years ago and sealed an entire ecosystem inside. The walls rise 600 metres on all sides. Because the animals cannot easily leave, every major species is present and the density of predators is among the highest in Africa. Black rhino, lion, spotted hyena, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, elephant. A full morning inside the crater is one of the most concentrated wildlife experiences in Tanzania.
Two days is the right amount of time for both parks. You will not rush through either one. Your guide will take you through each park with the same approach: explaining what you are seeing while you are seeing it, so every sighting means something.
Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 : Arusha to Tarangire National Park
Settle in and meet your guide
Early departure from Arusha, approximately 7am. The drive to Tarangire is about two hours on good tarmac road. You enter the park mid-morning, which gives you the full day for game drives.
Tarangire is known for two things above everything else: elephants and baobab trees. The elephants are here year-round but during the dry season the herds grow dramatically as animals migrate in from the surrounding Maasai steppe. Your guide will explain the movement patterns and why the Tarangire River is so central to the park ecosystem.
Lunch is taken in the park, either under the shade of a baobab or at a designated picnic site by the river. The afternoon continues with game drives before you exit the park in the early evening and drive one hour to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2 : Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
Early breakfast at the lodge, then a short drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. The road climbs through highland forest to the crater rim. Your first view from the top is a full 600 metre drop into a self-contained world of grassland, shallow lakes, and river channels.
You descend into the crater for a full morning game drive on the floor. The wildlife here is dense and resident. Black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo, spotted hyena, hippo, and a large flamingo population on the soda lakes are all regularly seen. Your guide explains the crater ecology as you move through it: which species live in which zones and why the volcanic history created this particular concentration of life.
Picnic lunch on the crater floor, then continue game drives through the afternoon. You ascend in the late afternoon and drive back to Arusha, arriving in the early evening. Your guide drops you at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Karatu is well-positioned between the two parks: it is one hour from Tarangire and a short drive from the Ngorongoro gate, which means you start Day 2 close to the crater rather than driving from Arusha.
The lodge has private en-suite rooms, hot water, good food, and a quiet setting in the Karatu highlands. It is not a luxury property and it is not a budget campsite. It is a comfortable, honest place to sleep between two full days of wildlife.

Because of the geography. Tarangire is closer to Arusha and the road is straightforward. Ngorongoro is further west and requires driving through the Karatu highlands. Doing Tarangire on Day 1 and overnighting in Karatu puts you perfectly positioned for an early descent into the crater on Day 2, which is the best time of day to be on the crater floor.
Will I see the Big Five on this 2 day Tarangire and Ngorongoro safari from Arusha?
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Africa to complete the Big Five in a single game drive. Lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and black rhino are all resident on the crater floor.
