This Tanzania safari and cultural trip from Arusha is designed around three things that most northern circuit itineraries separate or skip entirely.
The Maasai visit on Day 2 is not a roadside stop. It is a morning in Monduli Juu, a highland community about 20 kilometres from Arusha, with people who have agreed to receive visitors on their own terms. It takes time to do this properly. This itinerary gives it time.
Ngorongoro is about concentration. The crater floor covers roughly 260 square kilometres enclosed on all sides by the caldera walls. Because the animals cannot easily leave, every major species is present and relatively accessible. The density of predators is among the highest anywhere in the world. One full morning on the crater floor is enough to understand why.
The Serengeti is about scale. Two full days in the park gives you something a single day cannot: a second morning where you are already familiar with the landscape, and your eye is more trained to read what is in front of you. Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1 : Arrival and Overnight in Arusha
Settle in and meet your guide
Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport. The drive to Arusha takes around 45 minutes depending on traffic. This day is kept clear intentionally. Long travel is tiring and the safari works better when you begin it rested.
In the evening your guide sits with you to go through the next six days: the route, the parks, the timing, and anything specific you are hoping to see or understand.

DAY 2 : Monduli Juu Maasai Visit & Transfer to Karatu
Morning in the highlands. Afternoon drive to your base for the crater.
You leave Arusha in the morning and head toward Monduli Juu, a Maasai highland community about 20 kilometres from Arusha. The visit is genuine. Your guide has a real relationship with this community and they welcome visitors on their own terms. You spend the morning there.
After the visit you drive south and west toward Karatu, the small town that sits just outside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. The drive covers around 140 kilometres and takes most of the afternoon. The landscape changes steadily as you gain altitude and move into the crater highlands.
Karatu is your base for the night, positioned close enough to the crater gate to allow an early start the following morning.

DAY 3 :Ngorongoro Crater Full Morning
Early departure from Karatu. You pass through the conservation area gate, drive up through highland forest, and reach the crater rim. Your first view is 600 metres straight down into a closed world of grassland, lake, and river channels. The scale of it takes a moment to absorb.
The descent road to the crater floor is steep and unpaved. It takes 30 to 40 minutes to reach the bottom. Once there, you spend the full morning in a game drive across the crater floor. The wildlife here is resident and concentrated: black rhino, lion, spotted hyena, elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus, and flamingo on the soda lake. Your guide explains the ecology as you move through it, what lives in which zone and why each species is where it is.
After a packed lunch on the crater floor you ascend and drive west. The landscape drops in altitude and flattens as you leave the highlands and enter the Serengeti. The late afternoon arrival at your tented camp is a good moment. The air is different here.
Note on timing: The descent itself takes 3 to 4 hours including driving to the rim from Karatu. The crater floor game drive runs through the morning. Departure for Serengeti is after lunch.

DAY 4 : Full Day in the Serengeti
Two game drives today: early morning when predators are still active from the night, and late afternoon when temperatures drop and movement picks up again. Midday is spent at camp with a rest and a packed lunch.
Game drive length and pace are adapted to your family’s energy. Shorter stops where interest drops, longer stays where something is happening. Your guide reads both the wildlife and the children and adjusts accordingly. The Serengeti is where children begin to understand the actual scale of what wild Tanzania is.
DAY 5 : Second Full Day in the Serengeti
A different route. The best game drive conversations.
By the second full day in the Serengeti, children are more comfortable in the landscape. Most start scanning the bush themselves before the guide points anything out. The guide takes a completely different route from Day 4, exploring new terrain based on where wildlife is most concentrated that morning.
This day is what separates a good Tanzania family safari from a rushed one. [FK 5] One full day in the Serengeti gives a sample. Two days gives a picture. The conversations in the vehicle on Day 5 are almost always the best of the entire trip.

DAY 6 : Return to Karatu from Serengeti
You leave the Serengeti after an early morning game drive and begin the drive back east toward Karatu. This takes 4 to 5 hours including driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The road passes back through highland forest and the views from the rim road are worth stopping for.
Karatu in the evening is a quieter experience than the Serengeti camps. The highland air is cooler. A good night before the final drive.
DAY 7 : Return to Arusha Town or Airport
After breakfast you leave Karatu and drive back toward Arusha. The journey takes around 2.5 hours. Depending on your flight schedule, your guide drops you at your Arusha hotel or directly at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
A Note on the Great Migration
The Great Migration involves approximately 1.5 million wildebeest moving in a continuous annual circuit through the Serengeti ecosystem. It does not stop at any point in the year. What changes is where the herds are concentrated and what they are doing.
The river crossings at the Mara River happen primarily between July and October in the Northern Serengeti. The calving season in the Southern Serengeti, which brings the highest concentration of predator activity in the calendar, runs from January to March.
If you are booking a Tanzania safari and cultural trip between June and October, your guide will position the Serengeti days toward the north to give you the best chance at crossing sightings. If you are visiting outside that window, the wildlife is still exceptional. Your guide will explain exactly what to expect for your specific travel dates.

Fitness level: Moderate. Game drives involve sitting for extended periods in a 4×4. The Ngorongoro Crater descent road is steep and unpaved. No walking is required beyond your lodge or camp.

Is Tanzania safe for children?
