Watoky Safaris is a private safari company based in Moshi, Tanzania. We plan and guide safaris and day trips across northern Tanzania, with safaris departing from Arusha and day trips covering the area around Moshi and Arusha. We are a small operation built around one idea: a safari is only as good as the person explaining it to you. This page is about who we are, how we work, and why we do things the way we do.
Why Watoky Safaris Exists
Tanzania Understood
Most safari companies in northern Tanzania are built to handle volume. You enquire online, a sales team replies, and the trip is assembled from a set of standard itineraries that get sent out with small changes depending on the dates. The vehicle and driver are assigned from a pool, and the person who plans your trip is rarely the person who guides it.
None of that makes a company bad. It is simply how a larger operation works. Watoky Safaris exists because we think there is a different way to do this, and that for many travellers it is the better way.
The parks themselves do not change depending on which company you book with. Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti are the same places regardless of who drives you there. What changes is what happens inside the vehicle. Whether the person next to you can explain why that lioness is behaving the way she is, has actually walked the trail you are about to hike, and is genuinely invested in whether your week goes well. That is the part of a safari that is hardest to standardise, and it is the part Watoky is built around.
Tanzania, understood is not a slogan we picked because it sounded good. It describes what we want you to leave with. Not just photographs of places you went, but an understanding of what you were looking at and why it mattered.
Meet Your Guide
Manase Watoky Nkya is the founder and head guide of Watoky Safaris.
He has spent real time at the places described on this site. At Serval Wildlife Sanctuary he has fed the giraffes by hand and stood close enough to the lions to photograph them. He has swum in Chemka Hot Springs. He has spent time with Maasai families in Monduli Juu and in Kahe village, and still visits them.
The same applies to the parks on the Northern Circuit. Years spent studying how Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti actually work. That depth of knowledge and experience are what the safari itineraries on this site are built from.
This is the idea behind Watoky Safaris on any trip, a half day or a week. Understanding a place is part of what makes visiting it worth doing.

How We Work
This applies to every trip on this site, from a half day at Chemka to a week on the Northern Circuit.
Your group travels in its own vehicle. The person who plans your trip is usually the one who guides it. You communicate directly with your guide on WhatsApp. Before you book, you get a written itinerary and a clear cost.
